چکیده

A first-principles theory of inelastic tunneling between a model probe tip and an atom adsorbed on a surface is presented, extending the elastic tunneling theory of Tersoff and Hamann. The inelastic current is proportional to the change in the local density of states at the center of the tip due to the addition of the adsorbate. We use the theory to investigate the vibrational heating of an adsorbate below a scanning tunneling microscopy tip. We calculate the desorption rate of H from Si~100!-H~231! as a function of the sample bias and tunnel current, and find excellent agreement with recent experimental data. @S0163-1829~98!09036-5#

Theory of single molecule vibrational spectroscopy and microscopy.

We have carried out a density functional study of vibrationally inelastic tunneling in the scanning tunneling microscope of acetylene on copper. Our approach is based on a many-body generalization of the Tersoff-Hamann theory. We explain why only the carbon-hydrogen stretch modes are observed in terms of inelastic and elastic contributions to the tunneling conductance. The inelastic tunneling i...

Local control of single atom magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Individual Fe atoms on a Cu(2)N/Cu(100) surface exhibit strong magnetic anisotropy due to the crystal field. We show that we can controllably enhance or reduce this anisotropy by adjusting the relative position of a second nearby Fe atom, with atomic precision, in a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Local inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, combined with a qualitative first-...

A THEORY OF VACUUM TUNNELING MICROSCOPY1

A theory for tunneling between a real surface and a model probe tip, applicable to the "scanning tunneling microscope" is presented. The tunneling current is found to be proportional to the local density of states of the surface, at the position of the tip. It can be shown that the tunneling conductance has exponential dependence on the distance of the nearest approach to the surface

Large magnetic anisotropy of a single atomic spin embedded in a surface molecular network.

Magnetic anisotropy allows magnets to maintain their direction of magnetization over time. Using a scanning tunneling microscope to observe spin excitations, we determined the orientation and strength of the anisotropies of individual iron and manganese atoms on a thin layer of copper nitride. The relative intensities of the inelastic tunneling processes are consistent with dipolar interactions...
